Visual Impairment

Various types of visual impairment affect many people across the world. Visual impairment can result from many different causes and a significant proportion of people who are blind, or suffer from low vision were born that way. However, damage to a person’s eyesight can also occur through disease or an accident and in some cases a genetic defect that causes a loss of eyesight may not take effect until later life.

Visual impairment does not necessarily imply total blindness. There are many differing degrees of severity and quite a high proportion of people suffer from a fairly mild lack of eyesight that can simply be corrected by wearing glasses or contact lenses. However, some people will suffer from a level of visual impairment that cannot be corrected by simply wearing glasses. These people maybe totally or partially blind and they will often have to rely of specially designed devices and pieces of equipment in order to cope with day to day tasks. Thankfully, advances in modern technology have allowed for many devices to be developed that allow blind people to enjoy a relatively high quality of life, despite their visual impairment.
